Is it okay to not change the Prefilter for a long time? How Does It Affect RO Membrane?
Have. Overdue coarse filter cores will reduce their ability to hold sediment and absorb chlorine, causing the water to flow weakly, have an odor, and force the RO membrane to handle dirtier water than designed, causing the membrane to quickly clog and degrade prematurely. The RO membrane is the most expensive part of the machine, so replacing the pre-filter element on time is actually the cheapest way to protect it.
What does the coarse filter core do in an RO filter?
Conventional RO water purifiers have three coarse filter cups placed in front of the RO membrane. These three cores treat water in order from coarse to fine: holding large sediments, absorbing odors and chlorine, and then filtering finely before the water reaches the membrane. The RO membrane has extremely small filter holes, very effective but also very sensitive to dirt and residual chlorine, so it needs a "protective layer" in front.
Coarse filter cores do not hold residue forever. After a while, the residue fills the filter slots, the activated carbon is saturated and can no longer absorb. That's when the core ceases to be effective, even though its appearance still retains its shape.
What happens when the pre-filter is left out?
1. Weak water flow, slow filter
Accumulated residue causes the core to gradually clog. It is more difficult for water to pass through, the flow is reduced. The most easily recognizable symptom is that the faucet drips water, or the machine takes a long time to fill the tank.
2. The water has a strange smell and taste again
Activated carbon core (core 2 in the VaruB set is PP+OCB) absorbs odors and chlorine with a porous surface. When that surface is full, chlorine and odorants pass right through. If the output water begins to have a slight odor or taste different than before, it is a sign that the core needs to be replaced.
3. Dirty core becomes a place for sediment and microorganisms to accumulate
Cores left too long in a humid or flooded environment can accumulate thick residue and change dark color. Retained dirt can be carried away by the water when pressure changes, causing the filter core to become a source of dirt for downstream components.
4. The RO membrane must "bear the burden" of replacing the core
This is the most worrying consequence. When the coarse cores are no longer well protected, the water reaching the RO membrane still has a lot of sediment and residual chlorine. The RO membrane will:
- Fast clogged: Sludge sticks to the membrane surface, reducing the amount of pure water output and increasing the amount of wastewater.
- Degradation due to chlorine: Residual chlorine is an agent known to damage RO membranes in the long term, so expired activated carbon core means losing this defense layer.
- Pumps work harder: Clogged membranes cause the pump to create greater pressure to push water, increasing wear.
The end result is having to replace the RO membrane sooner than expected, which is much more expensive than periodically replacing the rough core. The actual lifespan of a membrane depends on the water source, membrane brand and frequency of use, so there is no universal number for every home, but the principle remains the same: a better rough core means a more durable membrane.
5 signs that it's time to replace the prefilter element
- The water coming out is weaker than usual even though the supply water pressure remains unchanged.
- Water has a strange smell or taste, especially the smell of chlorine or fishy smell.
- Core 1 changes color to dark When removing the cup, observe (dark yellow, brown, black).
- The filter fills the tank more slowly compared to when it was first installed.
- It's been over 12 months since the last change, although there are no clear signs yet.
With the core in an opaque cup (like most popular cup sets today), you can't see through it. Good habits are Remove the test cup once a month, to detect early instead of waiting for water quality to change to know.
Why do so many people let their cores expire?
Mostly not because of intention, but because of seeing the core replacement annoying: have to call a technician, wait for an appointment, pay, or be afraid to do it yourself for fear of incorrect installation or water leaks. Once blanched, it adds a few months. This is the reason why the quick connector design is increasingly popular in new generation core sets.
VaruB filter element set with quick connection: replace the element at home, no need for a technician
If the biggest hurdle is replacing the core, then the solution is to choose a core set that is easy to replace. VaruB water filter set with quick connector, ordinary users can operate it themselves in a few minutes. The core set has a diameter of 63, a length of 10 inches, and a quick connector, equivalent to the SMAX Pro V set on the market.
The set includes three cores, in the correct filtering order from coarse to fine:
- Core 1 – PP: Keeps dirt, mud, and rust away.
- Core 2 – PP+OCB: Both coarse filter and absorb odor and chlorine with activated carbon.
- Core 3 – PP: Fine filtration before water enters the RO membrane.
VaruB can be installed on the machine Karofi's new generation white cup set and machines used universal 10 inch cup set such as vat cups, organic cups. With very old machines or specific models, you should check again before ordering.
All three cores should be replaced maximum after 12 months, depending on water source and frequency of use. If your water has a lot of sediment or a strong odor, you should change it sooner. If the product has a manufacturer error, VARU supports returns within 30 days.
Frequently asked questions
How long should the coarse filter be replaced?
With the VaruB core set, it is recommended to replace it every 12 months, depending on water quality and usage level. Water with a lot of sediment needs to be changed sooner, so check the core monthly.
Is a few months overdue dangerous for the RO membrane?
The level depends on the water source. Clean water is affected slowly, water with lots of sediment or chlorine will affect the membrane more quickly. It's best not to leave it past its expiration date, even if it's just a few months, if you see signs of weak water or an odor.
Do I have to replace all three cores at the same time?
Optional. If the remaining two cores are still good, only replace the dirty core. However, most users replace the entire set at the same time to make it easier to remember the schedule and ensure uniform quality.
Is it difficult to replace the core yourself at home?
With the quick connector, it is not difficult: turn off the water, remove the cup, replace the core in the correct order of cups 1, 2, 3, reinstall and turn on the water to check for leaks.
